Laserbeak

12:16 pm Animated, Toy Reviews

OK, now for another xmas gift, this time from my lovely wife. It’s time to rock out with… Laserbeak?! Yeah, I’m reviewing Laserbeak separately from his packagemate Soundwave. This’ll be a quick one, for a simple toy.

His guitar mode is pretty straightforward. It’s molded entirely in black plastic, with a splash of red. There’s not a whole lot of features here, although you can adjust where the headstock sits on the neck (yes, I had to look those names up, I’m not a musician). There are a couple of pegs on the body that fit into Soundwave’s arms, and he can also be mounted on Soundwave’s roof in vehicle mode, which looks silly.

Transformation from Guitar to Robo-bird

  1. Slide the neck and headstock into the body of the guitar.
  2. Split the body of the guitar, and swing the halves out to reveal the head.

Yeah, Laserbeak here is what we call an accessory, he’s not supposed to be complicated - that’s the bigger toy in the package’s job. We’ve got a good representation of Laserbeak here, which is to say, a black and red bird. He’s kind of flat (which I’m going to pretend is an homage to his G1 namesake), and has little posability. Still, he’s fun for his interaction with Soundwave, and I just like the cassettes for some reason. I want Animated Ravage, Rumble, and Frenzy now.

Articulation Breakdown

  • You’re kidding, right? The wings, uh have a swivel joint that’s used in transformation. That’s pretty much it.

Score

  • Deco: Rating: ★★★★☆. A paint app on the eyes would have been nice, as would some sort of tampographed detail, but hey, he’s an accessory. That’s like complaining about the lack of paint apps on Bulkhead’s wrecking ball, or Bumblebee’s thrusters.
  • Posability: N/A. I’d have liked some head articulation, but oh well.
  • Transformation: Rating: ★★★★★. Simple and to the point.
  • Laserbeakery: Rating: ★★★★★. It’s got just about everything you’d want from a Laserbeak toy, although I’d love to see some blasters or rockets or something to mount on those pegs (yes, I know they’re tuning knobs, I just don’t care) on the wings.
  • Altmode: Rating: ★★★★★. It’s a guitar. Soundwave can hold it. I don’t expect any more from it, and it’s awesome.
  • Robot mode: Rating: ★★★★☆. It’s fun, I like it, whee he flies around yay.

Overall, Overall Rating: ★★★★½. This isn’t a serious review, it’s just for fun, just like this toy. Now go read the Soundwave review, once I stop procrastinating on it and write it.
